I was planning to begin talking about high stakes testing and the importance of authentic assessment here but have been hesitant because I haven’t had the mental space to break down many of the complex aspects to these issues. Even the acronyms are confusing for the average person.
However, I just saw this little news clip and thought it would be a perfect way to start the conversation here. This refers to the President’s upcoming visit to a high school in Crown Heights, Brooklyn which has an innovative technology focused curriculum and *GASP* does not use test scores for admission. The icing on the cake is that most students breeze through the requirements and graduate with a Regents diploma AND an associate’s degree.
Take a look (it’s very short) and know that I’ll be back soon with more thoughts about standardized testing in public schools.
